Special Events

This year, we are offering a number of special events for attendees at HILT 2016. We are delighted to announce the following:

You are our keynote speakers for HILT. We love hearing from the community of HILT attendees what you are working on or thinking about so we’ll be holding an Ignite-style evening of short presentations on Monday, June 13. Five minutes, 20 slides maximum, all designed to get others excited about an idea, a project, a theory, an experience, or just you.

In keeping with the spirit of Ignite events, we ask that presenters keep these talks short and engaging. Each presenter will have 5 minutes on stage. Each presentation will consist of 20 slides, with each slide advancing automatically every 15 seconds. For more information on the Ignite format, see: igniteannarbor.com/?p=29

We will provide laptop, digital projector, and microphone. If you’d like to participate, please email your slides your slides to trevor.munoz@gmail.com, with the subject line “[HILT IGNITE]” no later than 3:00 pm on Monday, June 13.

Staff from the Digital Humanities Cyberinfrastructure Group and Advanced Visualization lab will be on hand to show attendees around the lab. An interactive sphere, visualization cave, large-scale tiled wall display, touch table, Oculus Rift, and hand held scanner for generating 3d models will be on display. Throughout the social, refreshments will be available in the Lobby of the Information Technology Communications Complex.

Is this your first  time at Humanities Intensive Learning & Teaching? Are you new to Digital Humanities community? Do you just want to see more of Indianapolis? Join a small group of HILT participants at a local Indy restaurant, to make scholarly connections and begin new friendships.

Dinners will happen each evening with parties meeting at the selected restaurant.  You can sign up on the Dine Arounds page.

On Thursday, June 16, HILT will be offering an optional special event for participants. This is a first-come, first-served event. Please note that all museum and historical society events do require participants to purchase an admissions ticket. To register for a tour, please select the tour of your choice when completing your HILT registration.

Tour Topic: Digital Storytelling at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

Join artist and IUPUI doctoral student Janet Panoch for a special HILT excursion at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. We will focus on digital storytelling and include the special visiting exhibit by Dutch artist Jacco Olivier featuring vibrant video animations. We will begin our tour with a light dinner at the museum cafe where local beer and wine are also available. Janet will lead HILT visitors through galleries to discuss specific works on display that demonstrate storytelling in digital art. Following our tour, guests are invited to return to the cafe for drinks and continued conversation or they may tour the remainder of the museum independently.

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the extraordinary permanent collection housed at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis! You’ll have the chance to hear from the museum’s Collections Manager and Social Media Manager as they share the many ways they’ve collaborated to bring the museum’s collection of 120,000+ objects to new audiences through social media and the web. Learn how the Collections Department and Social Media Team have established a model for “Digital Engagement Projects,” using Tumblr, Instagram, Wikipedia, and more to bring new life to the museum’s 120,000+ objects. Participants are welcome to stay at the museum until our 5 pm closing!

Participants should plan to use personal or public transit to get to the museum as it is not walkable from the IUPUI campus. The Children’s Museum has graciously sponsored your attendance at this special event. To join this tour, find Jen or Trevor by lunch wednesday to register.

Tour Topic:  Over the past few years, the Indianapolis Museum of Art has integrated digital interpretive tools in featured exhibitions and the museum galleries. You will have the chance to tour the galleries to see examples as well as learn about the development process for these tools with curators and staff from the Museum.

HILT is about learning PLUS teaching. To make HILT successful, we work hard to recruit outstanding digital humanities scholars who are already also strong teachers. At the same time, a four-day summer intensive course on digital skills is an unusual genre to tackle and we’d love to help more talented digital humanists feel confident taking on this challenge so they can share what they know. This working session will focus on the question of what makes for a good summer institute course and what are the most successful strategies for teaching one. Let’s discuss and then get down to work on capturing a first draft of our collective know-how about how to design and teach such classes. Everyone is welcome—instructors and students.
